How to Use the SPARK Cards

Articulation:
Circle objects featuring target sounds. Practice words or phrases, then have your child tell a story about the scene.

Expressive Language:

  • Vocabulary: Label objects and concepts, describe and categorise them.
  • Sentence Structure: Help your child build sentences using target words, focusing on increasing sentence length and complexity.
  • Narrative Skills: Teach story elements (character, setting, plot, climax, conflict) and encourage sequential storytelling with conjunctions and transition words.
  • Main Idea: Have your child identify titles or main ideas for each card or set.
  • Pronouns: Practice correct pronoun use by circling characters and formulating sentences.
  • Verb Usage: Work on tense (past, present, future), plurals, and irregular verbs while describing scenes.

Receptive Language:

  • Sequencing: Arrange cards in logical order using inference.
  • WH- Questions: Use prompt cards to ask WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY, and HOW questions.

Social Skills:

  • Emotions: Use markers to add speech and thought bubbles to explore feelings and thoughts of characters.
  • Problem Solving: Discuss cause and effect, and brainstorm possible solutions to problems depicted in scenes.
