We have launched ‘Say Hey Your Way,’ an initiative aimed at encouraging participants to explore alternative communication methods that do not depend on complete spoken sentences. This October, we are inviting individuals, schools, workplaces, and communities across the country to participate in ‘Say Hey Your Way’ — a challenge focused on raising awareness of communication differences and the innovative ways in which children and adolescents express themselves.

The challenge involves communicating without spoken language for a full day with encouragement and messaging centered around using gestures and body language, singing, drawing or writing, utilising picture cards, emojis, or basic sign language, and other methods to communicate.

The campaign coincides with Augmentative & Alternative Communication (AAC) Awareness Month and shines a spotlight on the many ways children and young people with additional needs connect with the world. By taking part, your business can celebrate inclusion, engage employees, and deliver lasting impact for children across Ireland.

Karen Leigh, Founder and Chief Executive of Sensational Kids, said: “We are challenging people, companies, schools and communities to go a day without full sentences.  It’s possible! We encourage all to get involved. At Sensational Kids, we observe children with additional needs and those with communication differences finding creative ways to express themselves. “By participating in ‘Say Hey Your Way’, you give children the tools and therapies to find their way to connect.”

By engaging in ‘Say Hey Your Way’, schools, businesses, and communities can foster empathy, respect alternative communication styles, and generate crucial funds to ensure that children throughout Ireland can access transformative therapies. The challenges faced by children and adolescents who struggle to express themselves, speak, understand words, and communicate effectively are significant. ‘Hey’ or ‘Hi’ or ‘Hello’ serves as an expression that indicates introductions or simply a way to greet someone. We all do it in our own unique ways, and this campaign will illustrate just how differently we all express ourselves!

About ‘Say Hey Your Way’

Imagine not being able to say “hello” the way most of us do. For thousands of children with additional needs, communication looks different — gestures, pictures, technology, or even a smile can mean the world. This October, Sensational Kids invites companies, schools, and communities nationwide to join ‘Say Hey Your Way’ — a fun, creative challenge to communicate in new ways for one day. The campaign coincides with AAC Awareness Month (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) and shines a spotlight on the many ways children and young people with additional needs connect with the world. By taking part, your business can celebrate inclusion, engage employees, and deliver lasting impact for children across Ireland.

What is it?
‘Say Hey Your Way’ is a fun, 24-hour challenge where people are encouraged to communicate in creative alternatives to speech — using drawings, gestures, songs, emojis, or other tools. For one full day, participants experience first-hand the different ways children who rely on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) express themselves. It’s about building empathy, raising awareness, and showing that every voice matters
