Multidisciplinary Autism Diagnostic Assessment
Multidisciplinary Autism Diagnostic Assessment (psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy)
Autism Diagnostic Assessment Pathway – What to Expect
Our Autism Diagnostic Assessment is a structured, compassionate process designed to give you clarity and guidance. Here’s what you can expect:
- Pre-Assessment Information Gathering: We collect insights from you and your child’s teachers through questionnaires and a sensory profile. This helps us understand your child’s characteristics, strengths, challenges, and preferences before the first appointment.
- Appointment 1 – Parent Interview (ADI-R): A detailed interview with our psychologist using the Autism Diagnostic Interview–Revised. This session lasts about two hours and is attended by parents only.
- Appointment 2 – Child Assessment (ADOS): A play-based session with your child, conducted by two clinicians. One engages with your child while the other observes and scores using the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule. This assessment explores communication, social interaction, play, and behaviour, and typically takes 40–60 minutes.
- Scoring & Multidisciplinary Review: Our team carefully scores all assessments and meets to review findings, discuss observations, and determine if a diagnosis is indicated.
- Appointment 3 – Parent Feedback: We meet with you to explain the results, share recommendations, and develop a plan for next steps. Additional assessments may be suggested to ensure a complete understanding of your child’s needs.
- Comprehensive Report: You will receive a detailed written report outlining findings, diagnosis (if applicable), and tailored recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions
At what age can my child be assessed?
We assess children from age 3 to 18. Every child develops at their own pace, and some may experience delays in social communication skills. It’s important to allow adequate time for development before considering an autism assessment.
What is the waiting time for assessments?
Waiting times vary from month to month. We can provide the most up-to-date information when you contact us by phone.
Will my insurance cover the cost of the assessment?
Coverage depends on your provider. We can supply any documentation or details they require.
Will my diagnosis be recognised by the HSE?
Yes. All Sensational Kids chartered psychologists are professionally qualified and registered with the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI). This ensures your diagnosis is recognised within the Irish health and social care system, granting access to appropriate support services.
Do I need a referral to start the process?
No referral is required. You can contact us directly to begin.

Subsidised Fees
The fees we charge and the subsidies we provide for therapy services are directly influenced by the funds we raise each year. Every donation helps us offset the significant costs of delivering high-quality care from experienced clinicians. Your fundraising support ensures that children with additional needs can access essential therapies—such as psychology, speech, and occupational therapy—without financial barriers.
We rely on donations to subsidise fees and on grants and gifts to fund free supports for families who need them most. Our ability to do this depends entirely on the generosity of our supporters. By contributing, you help us maintain excellence in service while making life-changing interventions more affordable and accessible.
