Karyn O'Brien, Occupational Therapist

Karyn O’Brien, Paediatric Occupational Therapist at Sensational Kids, West Cork

Karyn joined our therapy team at Sensational Kids in West Cork as a School-based Occupational Therapist in the School Partnership Programme. Karyn, a recently graduated mature student, completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Therapy in University College Cork (UCC). As part of her degree, Karyn completed a twelve-week placement in a private paediatric clinic, part of which included working in a primary school two days a week. Her experience included working with children with all kinds of abilities and with different needs.

Karyn loves to create fun interventions with the people she works with, as she knows this is the best way to encourage children, teachers and caregivers to continue the interventions when she is not there. Karyn and her colleagues tap into the natural playfulness of children to provide interventions and exercises that are fun and functional, address areas of challenge, and build strength.

Karyn is passionate about advocating for people with different/ additional needs. She has first-hand experience of dealing with an often-confusing world as a neurodivergent and is passionate about changing the way people think about (hidden) disabilities. Karyn approaches every person as an equal, with patience and empathy, and a genuine desire to empower those she works alongside to be the best they can be. Karyn has a particular interest in neurodiversity and is constantly learning more about this topic to improve her skills.
