Presented by Alex Kelly & Amy Green, Specialist Speech & Language Therapists & Authors of ‘Talkabout‘ Resources
Mc William Park Hotel
Claremorris, County Mayo
Wednesday 28th November 2018
The importance of being socially skilled cannot be over-estimated. We all need these skills to communicate effectively in order to listen to others, to express ourselves, to be taken seriously and to make friends. We know that social competence contributes to quality of life and has been repeatedly demonstrated to be a critical variable in predicting success in future life. However, not all children develop social competence naturally. Some children struggle with their social skills and require intervention.
This workshop will help you to answer these important questions about social skills:
- Assessment… Where do I start?
- Intervention… How can I teach social skills?
- Evaluation… How can I measure progress?
- An introduction to social skills, what do we mean and why is this important?
- Assessing social skills and planning where to start
- The theory behind the hierarchy of skills
- How to complete an assessment
- How to reassess and measuring effectiveness
- Effective intervention – the different strategies to teach social skills
- How to set up and run a social skills group
- Practical ideas of games and activities you could run
Alex Kelly is a speech and language therapist with nearly 30 years’ experience of working with people who have difficulties with their social skills, self-esteem and their relationships. She is best known for being the author of the hugely popular TALKABOUT resources which are practical books to help staff to develop social skills. She spent 23 years working in the NHS but now runs her own business jointly with her husband. She provides training and consultancy work in social skills and spends much of her time working in schools to help them develop social skills in an effective and measurable way. As a company, they have developed a way to set social skills targets and measure and report on progress and this is forming the basis of some research into the effectiveness of social skills work in schools. Several of their schools have had excellent feedback because of this from Ofsted (the inspector of schools in England) and Estyn (the inspector of schools in Wales). She is also currently writing a text book on social skills and is continuing to develop resources in all areas of social skills. She lectures internationally and is well known for being inspirational and passionate in her work with people who have disabilities.
Amy Green is a senior speech and language therapist for Alex Kelly Ltd specialising in the area of social skills. She provides training in communication and developing social skills as well and supporting Alex to expand the Talkabout series including co-authoring Talkabout for Adults. She works one day a week in a school with children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties providing one to one speech and language therapy as well as helping the school to put social skills on to the curriculum for all students. Previously Amy has worked in SEBD settings and special education schools around Hampshire. Amy is also the training manager for Alex Kelly Ltd, organising and coordinating all training courses provided by the company.
