Katie Berney, Occupational Therapist, Kildare

Katie is a recent addition to our therapy team at Sensational Kids county Kildare, having recently graduated from Brighton University following a two-year master’s course in Occupational Therapy. Katie previously worked in Ulster Hospital in Belfast, in orthopaedic trauma. It has always been a passion of hers to work with children. Katie is local to Kildare, and therefore delighted to return home to county Kildare to pursue her new role as a paediatric occupational therapist. She is motivated to create a difference for children, believing it to be the most rewarding and fulfilling career, and affording her the opportunity to contribute to children’s wellbeing, that of their family, and to society at large.

Katie enjoys keeping active in her spare time through athletics and GAA. She additionally values time spent with her pets. Katie has a keen interest in animal therapies, having completed a research project on the ‘Experiences of Occupational Therapists Working in Diverse Settings, using Animals as Part of their Therapeutic Intervention’. Through this study she found how using interventions that involve animals, animal assisted therapy, can have a very positive impact on the individual’s physical and mental well-being.

Katie gained substantial practical experience through her studies within adult settings in hand therapy, orthopaedics, neurology, community and inpatient mental health. She states that the skills gained within these areas have not only increased her awareness of the prevalence of disabilities that exist throughout society, but also the potential impact that she can make to alleviate these challenges.

Katie is motivated to continue her professional development as a paediatric occupational therapist and excited to engage in further training alongside her working role here at Sensational Kids.
