We provide vital front-line therapeutic supports, such as speech & language and occupational therapy,  for children with additional needs, ensuring that these children in need have access to vital supports when and where they need them.

Together with the CEO and the senior management team you will provide leadership to the organisation. This role will take responsibility for implementing the fundraising strategy and attaining targets for fundraising.

The Role

The Head of Fundraising & Communications will be a key member of Sensational Kids Senior Management Team, overseeing national fundraising and communications.  This role will have responsibility for achieving Sensational Kids’ annual fundraising targets and will work closely with the CEO to ensure that fundraising activities echo Sensational Kids’ mission and help to build the organisation’s brand throughout the nation. This senior role will play a key role in sustaining the ongoing operations of Sensational Kids’ direct therapeutic support services for children with additional needs.


Core Purpose:

To maximise the generation of funds and awareness of Sensational Kids child development centres around Ireland. The primary objectives of the role are to secure ongoing funding and raise awareness to sustain the continuing and expanding work of Sensational Kids in its role as a provider of direct therapy services to children with additional needs. The post holder will be responsible for all fundraising and communications activity, conducted on behalf of the organisation.


As Head of Fundraising and Communications, you will also be expected to lead the Fundraising and Communications functions and oversee the management and development of fundraising and communications activities. This is a senior role as a key member of the senior management team where you will work closely with the CEO and Head of Marketing & Business Development.


Primary Duties and Accountabilities:

  • To work closely with the CEO to review, update and implement our three-year fundraising strategy
  • To develop a fundraising communications strategy to deliver on organisational fundraising targets.
  • Together with the CEO, proactively develop relationships with prospective donors, using appropriate engagement strategies.
  • Working closely with the CEO, achieve strategic fundraising targets for Sensational Kids new National Child Development Centre, a capital development project raising €1.8million.
  • Maintain and develop relationships with existing donors.
  • Identify and research potential funding opportunities (non-statutory)
  • Promote Sensational Kids as a recipient of legacies, trust, and foundation grants
  • Develop the areas of Direct Recruitment (Regular/Monthly Giving) and Online/New Media Fundraising
  • Develop proposals for projects that could attract new funding
  • Oversee the development of new fundraising streams such as major gift and corporate support programmes and others as requested
  • Organise direct marketing campaigns using several media channels to achieve agreed targets
  • Increase awareness of the Sensational Kids brand
  • Develop communications strategies and channels with a view to generating awareness to attract funding
  • Ensure consistency and quality in all fundraising and communications materials
  • Manage and maintain supporter files and records in compliance with GDPR and Electronic Privacy Regulations
  • Make risk analyses and balancing time-cost ratios to focus effort on the most appropriate fundraising activities with the highest chance of success
  • Foster a team culture that is target driven, encourages accountability, innovation, kindness towards and support for colleagues, commitment to continuous learning, and a creative approach to problem solving
  • Provide regular reports to the CEO and board’s fundraising subcommittee on fundraising activities and performance, ensuring all relevant information is gathered, analysed and recorded
  • Support external individuals and groups who are organising fundraising events for Sensational Kids
  • Oversee Public Relations, external Communications and Press relations for profile-raising events and services
  • Continually monitor, review and report on progress against strategy, plans and market opportunities
  • Undertake other duties as required to ensure the proper functioning of the fundraising and general team
  • Manage all fundraising processes & procedures to ensure organisation is constantly aligned with The Guiding Principles of Fundraising and ensuring compliance with the Guidelines for Charitable Organisations on Fundraising from the Public


Qualifications or experience required for the role:

  • Experience of working at a senior management level in the charity and/or not-for-profit sector.
  • At least five years’ experience of successful corporate fundraising.
  • Experience of raising funding for a capital development project.
  • Experience of developing and delivering organisation-wide fundraising strategies and tactical plans with a proven track record of managing fundraising targets and having reached or exceeded them.
  • Experience of donor stewardship with understanding of donor needs, income channels, strong relationship building and management skills and evidence of effective donor reporting skills and experience.
  • Experience of establishing systems for monitoring and evaluating communications and fundraising and measuring long term impact.
  • Good knowledge and understanding of equality and children’s issues.
  • Confident and engaging interpersonal skills with the ability to network, influence and build relationships at all levels.
  • Up to date and thorough knowledge of the principles, practice and legislation relating to fundraising, campaigning and communications in a charity setting.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills with a successful track record of managing, developing and motivating staff.
  • Ability to prioritise workload of self and others.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including report writing, public speaking and presentations.
  • Excellent project management skills.
  • Experience of having managed third-party suppliers/agencies.
  • Good budget management skills.

  • A full driving licence with access to a car to travel between our four regional centres as the role will be supporting regional fundraising too.

  • Sensational Kids is still only 14 years old. Fundraising, whilst a core aspect of the future sustainability of Sensational Kids,  is is still in its infancy. Therefore a willingness to manage a developing fundraising income stream and having to be involved in all aspects of fundraising is essential from strategy development to paperwork, graphics etc.

Reporting Relationships

Ultimate accountability is to the Board of Directors,  however the position will report directly to the CEO



  • A competitive annual salary scale of €73,092 – €78,402  per annum

This is a  full-time permanent post working five days per week (35 hours) with flexible working hours options to choose your own hours with hybrid/remote working between the office and home.

Fundraising by its nature can involve occasional out of hours/weekend work. Time in Lieu is afforded if weekend working is required.

Whilst based from our HQ in Kildare Town, it is envisaged that the postholder will work remotely and be based nearby or in commutable distance from our Kildare Town centre for onsite meetings, in particular in relation to our capital development campaign which is based in Kildare Town.



Start Date

This role will commence as soon as the most suitable candidates are available, ideally by August 2022.
