Transition to Secondary School Group

Our Transition To Secondary School Group  aims to address the difficulties that young people with special educational needs face when they transition from primary school to secondary school.

Open to children of all abilities, this programme helps to prepare students for the change to that they have the skills to adapt to life in secondary school.

 

Group Objectives

The group aims to address the difficulties that young people with special educational needs face when they transition from primary school to secondary school. The group will consist of children with similar needs, and will focus on learning strategies to help deal with the issues encountered along the way.

Venue

Kildare Town Community School

Kildare Town, and is open to children from anywhere in Ireland to attend.

 

 

Who should attend?

Transitioning to Secondary school is a specially designed programme for children with special educational needs who are currently in 6th class who have difficulties in the following areas: organisation, time management, coping with change, coping with peers and coping with schoolwork. The group is open to children of all abilities and is designed for children with special educational needs.

 

Cost

The cost of this group is subsidised by a grant from The Ireland Funds. Without funding places on this group will be in the region of €200+ each but with funding places will cost just €50 per child.

Included in this cost, each child will receive:

  • A Folder with hand-outs about each session so that at the end of the course they will have a resource to refer back to in the future.
  • A pack of resources worth to help with organisational skills.

10.00 – 11.30 Parent Session: Parent Expectations 

Facilitated by Yvonne O’Neill Play Therapist.

Discussing parents own expectations and anxieties about their children starting secondary school.  Guidance on how parents can manage the transition, and help children to help themselves.

10.00am – 11.30 Student Session: Effective Study Skills

Facilitated by Educational Psychologist

Student Session – Normalising feelings, examining learning styles, introduction to mind mapping/web plans.

 

 

11.30 – 1pm Student Session: Exploring Anxiety

Facilitated by Yvonne O’Neill Play Therapist

Recognising and managing anxiety. This includes ways to avoid anxiety and limit stress, what to do when anxious, and ways to calm oneself when worried.

 

 1.00-1.30 LUNCH (students should bring their own)

 

1.30 – 3pm Student Session: Preparation for Change

Facilitated by Yvonne O’Neill Play Therapist

Consolidation and review of skills learned through activities and games. Preparing for endings and new beginnings! Reviewing feelings & Student feedback

Please note the schedule may be subject to change based on the needs of the children attending.

 

Places on this group are strictly limited to 20 and for part of this group the students may be divided into two groups of ten.
